Levi hated to leave Shane at the pack house while he patrolled the warehouse, but it was his turn to work the night shift and Levi didn't blow off his responsibilities.

He glared at every cage he passed, letting the criminals know how much he didn't want to be there.

"Just chill," Ethan said. "This is the easiest paycheck you'll ever earn." He kicked his booted feet up onto the card table and tucked his hands behind his head. Pierce sat at the table as well, but he was slouched in his seat, scanning the cells.

"You need to stop being so lax." Levi scowled. "Don't think for a second these guys are chilling. Every last one of them is trying to figure a way out of their cage."

He swung his gaze toward Orlando's cage and watched as the lion shifter ran his hands over the bars. The guy wasn't going to give up until he was free.

Or dead.

Hennessey walked up to Levi and stood next to him. "I've been keeping an eye on him. Orlando keeps giving me death stares."

The lion shifter looked their way. He sized up Levi before giving him his back. He dropped onto the makeshift cot, then lay down and stared at the ceiling. Levi's muscles ached at the thought of having to battle Orlando again.

"I just wish the council would hurry up and find a more permanent prison for these guys." Levi turned and headed down the row of cells, Hennessey walking with him.

"I heard they're trying to figure out how to pierce the veil so they can use the magical prison."

With no one on the other side to let them in, getting past the veil was impossible. Levi wasn't going to hold his breath that the magical prison would be a foreseeable option.

He spun when someone banged on the bars of their cage. Orlando was back on his feet, giving Levi an evil grin. Levi was itching to put a bullet in the asshole's head. He had a sinking feeling it just might come down to that. "The council should have ordered a kill warrant against that bastard," Levi said.

"A lot of them should have been put down," Hennessey said. "I don't know why the council is using kid gloves with them. Most aren't redeemable."

Ethan and Pierce started playing cards, and a tic started in Levi's jaw. Lax guards were a recipe for disaster. They needed to stay vigilant, especially around these violent offenders.

"Why don't you two earn your fucking pay?" Hennessey snapped. "Put those cards down and do your rounds."

"Why?" Ethan asked. "You and Levi are doing them."

Levi had started toward the table, ready to yoke Ethan from his seat when a crash pulled him up short. He spun and growled when he saw one of the cages had fallen over.

Barrack, a feral leopard shifter, kicked at the ceiling of his fallen cage until the metal gave. Ethan and Pierce were on their feet in seconds as the four of them raced to stop the leopard from escaping.
